Domestic Tourism

Since the Liberation War of 1971, Bangladesh has made significant strides in developing its tourism industry. In the aftermath of the war, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation under the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, as outlined in Article No. 143 and 144 of the constitution. This move aimed to promote domestic tourism and stimulate economic growth in the country.

By 1984, the government began shouldering the financial burden of the corporation, signaling a commitment to supporting and nurturing the tourism sector during times of economic prosperity. As Bangladesh's economy flourished, with increases in business activities and agricultural production, both local and foreign currency earnings saw a rise. This period marked the emergence of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation as a profitable venture, largely driven by domestic tourists. While foreign currency earnings were modest at this stage, the corporation capitalized on revenues from various sources such as hotels, motels, restaurants, picnic spots, and parking charges.

Over time, the corporation expanded its commercial ventures and emerged as a formidable player in the tourism industry, competing favorably with private organizations. With extensive land properties, infrastructure, and superstructures already in place, courtesy of government investments, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation became well-positioned to cater to the growing demands of tourists. Moreover, the presence of experienced professionals in the tourism sector further bolstered its operations.

The involvement of private organizations and foreign investors underscores the attractiveness of Bangladesh as a tourist destination. The government's strategic focus on attracting foreign investment and deposits, coupled with its utilization of existing resources, has propelled the tourism industry forward. This collaborative approach between the public and private sectors has not only enhanced the tourism experience but has also driven economic growth through increased revenue generation.

Looking ahead, continued cooperation and innovation will be essential for sustaining the positive momentum in Bangladesh's tourism industry. By further improving infrastructure, promoting sustainable tourism practices, and leveraging technological advancements, the country can unlock even greater potential in this vital sector.
