As of March 2025, the Trump administration has introduced new travel rules with significant implications:

  1. Expanded Travel Ban: A new travel ban may soon bar individuals from Afghanistan and Pakistan from entering the U.S., following a review of these countries' security and vetting protocols. This could impact tens of thousands of Afghans who were cleared for resettlement due to their work with U.S. forces during the 20-year war.

  2. Increased Visa Processing Times: Enhanced scrutiny and additional administrative steps are expected to slow visa approval times. U.S. embassies and consulates might limit daily appointments, leading to longer waits for applicants planning business, education, or tourism trips.

  3. Suspension of Refugee Admissions: The administration has temporarily halted refugee resettlement programs, citing the need for an in-depth review of security procedures. This freeze affects already vetted refugees ready to enter the U.S., leaving many stranded with canceled plans.

  4. Bolstered Border Security: A national emergency has been declared at the U.S.-Mexico border, and federal funds have been directed to enhance border barriers and fencing. The Department of Homeland Security has been instructed to increase the detention of individuals crossing illegally until they are deported or processed.

  5. Elimination of 'Catch and Release': The administration aims to end the practice known as "catch and release," where individuals arrested at the border could be released while awaiting court hearings. The push for immediate detention reflects a broader focus on removing unauthorized immigrants, including those without criminal convictions.

These measures highlight the administration's emphasis on tightening immigration policies and strengthening national security. [ CBC News, CNN, and The New York Times]
