      Rome History
       
     Roman history can be divided into the 
     Regal Period, the Roman Republic, and the           Roman Empire, beginning as a small village 
      and growing into a vast empire by adapting           politically and militarily, eventually shaping   Western civilization before collapsing under   internal and external pressures. Major events   include the Punic Wars, the rise of figures like   Julius Caesar and Augustus, the spread of   Christianity, and the eventual division of the empire.
      Early Rome & The Regal Period
    •   OriginsAncient Rome started as a small village in central Italy.
    •   FoundingThe city was founded by the legendary figures Romulus and Remus and was                                 initially ruled by kings.
    • The Roman Republic (c. 509 BC – 27 BC)
    • Government:
      The kings were overthrown, and Rome shifted into a republic, a system with                             elected officials and a Senate.
    • Expansion:
      During this period, Rome fought and won the Punic Wars, which established                                its dominance over the Mediterranean.
    • Internal Conflict:
      The Republic faced internal struggles between patricians (nobles)                                         and plebeians (commoners), and saw the rise of powerful 
    •                            figures like Julius Caesar.
     The Roman Empire (27 BC – 476 AD)                                   
       Augustus
    Julius Caesar's adopted son, Octavian, became Caesar Augustus,
                The first Roman Emperor, starting a period of peace and              prosperity 
    known as the Pax Romana.
    •   Peak and Decline:
      The empire reached its largest size, but eventually,
    •                             internal conflicts, economic issues, and invasions by migrating 
    •                             tribes led to its decline.
    •    Division:           The empire was split into the Western and Eastern Roman Empires.
    • Fall of the West: The Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD, marking the end of classical                                       antiquity.
    •  Constantinople:   The Eastern Roman Empire, centered in Constantinople, continued for                                   centuries, becoming the Byzantine Empire.

    • Religion: Early Romans worshipped many gods, including Jupiter, Mars, and Vesta. Christianity appeared during the Empire and later became the official religion.
